“I don’t know,” Anna says, her face twisting; she leans closer to Dr. Morden, lips curled into an inviting yet somber smile - she is offering up this secret like a sacrifice, hands in the air and in her lap and in Morden’s lap, because after this mission is over she has a feeling she will never see Dr. Morden again. “We haven’t seen each other in a year, and I went as far away from him as I possibly could on our anniversary… I think it was on purpose.”
“Your secret is safe with my indifference,” Dr. Morden replies coolly, halting the flutter of Anna’s heart deep in the cage of her chest — so it’s going to be like
that,
huh. “Just keep in mind—” he sighs, as if he’s forcing himself to act invested, or as if Anna has ripped off a freshly formed scab over his soul,
oh, right, his wife—
“you shouldn’t take your love for granted.”
